2012 GMC Terrain Compact Crossover SUV

The GMC Terrain is considered by many to be one of the leaders of the compact SUV category. The 2012 model is available in 4 trim levels. These are the SLE-1, SLE-2, SLT-1 and the higher end trim is the SLT-2. The starting price for the base trim is $25,260 while the higher end trim starts at 31,260.

All 4 trim levels come standard with a 2.4L 4-cylinder engine that produces 182 horsepower. Additionally, there is an optional upgrade available to a 3.0L V6 engine. This upgrade is available for all trim levels besides the base SLE-1. The 4-cylinder engine ensures a decent gas mileage and the GMC Terrain has an estimated fuel efficiency rating of 22mpg for city driving and 32mpg for highway driving. This makes it one of the most fuel efficient 4-Cylinder SUV currently available and is definitely a big advantage if you consider the current gas prices.

The exterior design of this crossover is a bit "trucky" and most reviewers seem to like it. It comes standard with 17-inch alloy wheels while the higher end SLT-2 trim is equipped with 18-inch chrome-clad wheels.

Another advantage of the 2012 GMC Terrain is the good safety ratings. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has awarded it with the best possible rating of "Good" while it has also earned 4 stars in the NHTSA tests. As you can imagine it has all the standard safety features of modern vehicles including ABS, traction and stability control, full set of airbags, a rear vision camera and a passenger sensing system.

Although it has a truck looking exterior its interior is classy and really comfortable with a lot of high tech standard features that ensure a comfortable ride. Some of the features that are worth mentioning are the standard bluetooth connectivity, the cruise control, OnStar turn by turn navigation and the audio system with a USB port. These are just some of the standard features of the base trim, higher end trims like the SLT-2 obviously offer additional features like an 8-way power adjustable driver seat, remote starter, heated front seats, premium 8-speaker sound system, leather upholstery and there is also the option of a 7-inch color touchscreen navigation system.

According to most available reviews, the main drawbacks of the 2012 Terrain is the limited cargo space and the not so responsive steering. However, overall it earns decent marks in most test drives and reviews and deserves its spot as one of the top compact crossover SUVs mainly because of its good gas mileage and well built interior.
